Lake Catch-Up, 4th Jul
Baptiste and I have been doing a bit of fishing in the odd evening here and there for two
main reasons. Firstly, we wanted to see how the fish are fattening back up
after spawning five weeks ago, and secondly, for the final testing of our
newest boilie flavours.
I can report, fish weights are definitely on the up as we’ve seen several
specimens on the bank already a few pound heavier than last year, despite
recent spawning. The vastly reduced number of anglers here in the last eighteen
months due to the Covid pandemic has meant we have had to feed the fish through
the winter as normal, but also through their hungriest months in the summer. However,
on the upside, the lack of lines in the water has given the fish confidence to
feed freely and heavily allowing average weights to go up a little faster than
we normally see.
I announced earlier in the year that we would have to drop one of our best-selling baits
from the list due to difficulties in obtaining ingredients, but now it looks
like our Ouest Bombays are back on the menu, for this year at least.
In anticipation of thinking we were losing one of our best baits, we got back to
testing a couple of other flavours that we had been tweaking over the past few years.
The first of these, “Ouest Bourbons”, has proven to be a monstrous success, catching big
fish from the moment it was first introduced to the lakes. The boilies are made
with a fish and birdseed base and have a slightly smoky, rich, sweet Vanilla
aroma.
The second flavour, “Ouest Hawaiians”, was designed as a Catfish repellent as not all fishermen are
interested in catching them. Catfish are not a big fan of citrus flavours, and whilst
not technically a citrus fruit, Pineapple does have that acidic tang. Sweet Pineapple
is also a well-known Carp favourite, so this seemed the logical way to go.
However, as the fish hadn’t seen much of this particular flavour before, I had
a feeling it would be a slow starter.
Early results were not encouraging as the first session with them blanked! As more
and more of the baits were introduced, the fish slowly came round as they started
to recognise it as food. The Pineapple flavour seems most popular with the
Grass Carp and Koi, but has also hooked a few big Carp, oh and one 29lb Catfish!
So, although not completely Catfish-proof, it’s proven itself to find a lot less
Cats than any other flavours tried here.
For the record, in the last four evenings, Baptiste and I fished with only five rods between us
including 2 Cat rods, fewer rods in the lake helps to keep the angling pressure
to an absolute minimum, allowing the fish to feed with more confidence which helps
give a better idea of what the fish might prefer flavour-wise. We have been using
our Bombay’s, Malibu’s, Bourbons, Hawaiians and the new tweaked Atlantics for
2021 with increased levels of Paprika and Garlic. The list of fish looks
something like this:
1x Koi 8lb
1x Koi 22lb
1x Grass Carp 22lb
1x Grass Carp 24lb
